Don’t Go Back

Don’t Go Back

You said yes to more. You said yes to the narrow road. You left the shallow, powerless version of Christianity behind because you wanted the real thing, the fire, the glory, the weight of His presence. And you got it. You’ve tasted the depths of God. You’ve seen Him move in power. You’ve felt the weight of His holiness and the sweetness of His nearness.

But now… you feel the pull.

The weight of the cost is starting to hit you. The early mornings in prayer that leave you exhausted. The sacrifice of walking alone when others don’t understand your obedience. The way your faithfulness to the narrow path seems to be closing doors instead of opening them. The financial strain. The tension in your relationships. The constant dying to self.

And you start wondering… Did I make this harder than it needed to be?

You look around at people who seem to be living a comfortable, easy version of Christianity, and they seem fine. They’re not fasting like you are. They’re not giving like you are. They’re not contending like you are. And yet their lives look peaceful, successful even.

So the thought creeps in: What if I could just scale back a little? What if I could ease up without losing what God gave me?

Let me tell you exactly what’s happening: you are being tempted to go back. Back to Egypt. Back to the comfort of slavery. Back to the powerless Christianity that you already know is empty. And the most dangerous part? You will try to call it wisdom. You’ll say you’re balancing. You’ll say you’re settling in. You’ll even call it peace.

But it’s not peace, it’s compromise.

When the Israelites were delivered from Egypt, they saw the Red Sea part. They saw manna fall from heaven. They saw water come from a rock. But when things got hard, when the wilderness didn’t feel as miraculous, they started craving Egypt.

“We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost, also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic. But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!” (Numbers 11:5-6)

They were willing to trade freedom for food. They were willing to go back to slavery because at least slavery came with seasoning. And that’s exactly what’s happening to you. You’re considering trading the weight of His glory for the comfort of stability.

But here’s the truth: you cannot have both.

You cannot carry the cross and still reach for the comforts of the world. You cannot live sold out and still keep control. The cost doesn’t shrink because the road gets hard. If anything, the deeper you go, the higher the price.

“If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you.” (John 15:20)

That’s the promise. Jesus didn’t say, “Follow me and it will get easier.” He said, “Follow me and it will be worth it.

But you have to decide. Because the enemy is more than happy to give you comfort if it means you’ll stop contending. He will give you success if it means you’ll stop seeking the face of God. He will open doors if it means you’ll stop going to the secret place.

That’s why so many believers start strong and then fade out. They hit that moment where the weight gets heavy, and instead of pressing through, they shrink back. They decide that maybe a more balanced, quiet life is wise. They stop laying hands on the sick. They stop fasting. They stop standing in the gap for revival. They still show up to church, but the fire is gone.

“And we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.” (Hebrews 10:39)

You cannot go back. Not now. You’ve seen too much. You know too much. You cannot unknow the depths of God. You cannot trade the weight of His glory for the cheap plastic comforts of this world and expect to be satisfied.

Lot’s wife looked back, and it destroyed her (Genesis 19:26). She was delivered, but her heart was still tied to Sodom. And that’s where some of you are right now. You’ve come out, but your heart is still aching for what you left behind.

So what’s the answer?

You need to stop flirting with comfort. You need to stop entertaining the thought that you can ease up on the cost and still keep the glory. Stop comparing your path to others who didn’t pay the same price. If God led you into the wilderness, He’s not trying to kill you, He’s trying to make you holy.

You don’t get to choose the path and the outcome. You chose Him, now you let Him choose the road. And if that road includes loss, isolation, and pain, so be it. Because what’s on the other side is far greater than anything you could build for yourself.

“Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.” (Philippians 3:8)

Count it loss. Every bit of it. The career. The reputation. The stability. The comfort. Let it burn. Let Him have it all. Stop thinking you can walk in resurrection power without the fellowship of His suffering.

You already know what’s back there. It’s empty. You didn’t leave Egypt because you were looking for an upgrade, you left because you were dying there. Don’t be deceived into thinking you can go back and still carry the fire of God.

Settle it now. Burn the exit strategy. Let the comforts die. Let the fire of God refine you until there’s nothing left to return to.

You are not called to comfort. You are called to glory. Don’t trade it for a meal in Egypt.
