Fear

How to Overcome It and Let Nothing Have a Hold on You
Fear is one of the greatest weapons the enemy uses to keep the people of God bound. Fear paralyzes, distorts vision, and creates confusion. But here is the truth: Fear is not a fruit of the Spirit. Fear is a spirit, and it is not from God.
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)
If fear is not from God, why do we entertain it? Why do we allow it to sit at the table of our minds and influence our decisions? Fear is not something to manage or tolerate, it is something to confront and destroy at the root.
Let’s get real: If your greatest fear actually came upon you, would God still be God? If the answer is yes, then fear has no right to stay in your life.
Fear Is a Liar
Fear is a liar, and its goal is to get you to question the nature of God. Fear whispers that God isn’t enough, that if the worst were to happen, you would be undone. But here is the reality: Fear isn’t about the circumstance you dread, it is about the lie that God won’t be enough if that circumstance comes to pass.
Job faced this reality head on:
“For the thing I greatly feared has come upon me, and what I dreaded has happened to me.” (Job 3:25)
Fear opened a door. Fear creates access for the enemy. But even when Job’s worst fear came upon him, was God still God? Yes. God sustained Job, restored him, and revealed Himself in greater glory through Job’s suffering.
The point isn’t that Job’s fear manifested, the point is that God was still on the throne. And if God is still on the throne, fear has no authority.
Fear Is a Counterfeit Throne
When you allow fear to dictate your decisions, you have made fear lord over your life. Fear becomes a counterfeit throne. But God alone is King.
So let’s confront the core question of fear:
• What if your greatest fear came true?
• Would God still be God?
• Would He still be good?
• Would He still be sovereign?
• Would He still provide?
If the answer is yes, then what exactly are you afraid of?
Fear thrives in uncertainty. But Kingdom living isn’t about certainty, it is about trust. You don’t overcome fear by controlling the outcome. You overcome fear by surrendering the outcome.
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego stood before the fiery furnace and declared:
“Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king. But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods.” (Daniel 3:17–18)
They were free from fear because their confidence wasn’t in the outcome, their confidence was in the nature of God. They knew God would be God whether they were delivered or consumed. That’s the level of faith that disarms fear, not faith in the outcome, but faith in the unshakable nature of God.
Destroying Fear at the Root
Some people try to deal with fear after it strikes. That’s reactionary, and it’s dangerous. You’re called to confront fear before it has a chance to manifest.
Fear is always rooted in a lie about God’s nature or His care for you. Every fear comes down to an attack on the character of God:
• What if I lose everything? → God is my provider.
• What if I fail? → God’s power is made perfect in my weakness.
• What if I’m wrong? → God’s sovereignty isn’t threatened by my mistakes.
Expose the lie. Replace it with truth. Fear thrives in darkness, it loses its grip when exposed to the light of God’s nature.
Stop Leaning on Someone Else’s Faith
Some of you are afraid because you’re leaning on someone else’s faith instead of standing in your own identity in Christ. You want security through the teachings of a leader, and that’s dangerous.
What if I’m wrong? What if your pastor, your mentor, your covering, what if they miss it?God would still be God.
Your faith can’t be built on me. Your faith can’t even be built on a revelation, it has to be built on the nature of God Himself. I’m here to equip you, but I’m not your foundation, Christ is.
“For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 3:11)
If your faith stands on my teaching alone, you’ve built on sand. But if your faith stands on the person of Jesus Christ, even if I’m wrong, God is still God.
Fear Cannot Survive in the Presence of Worship
Fear is a spirit. And spirits respond to atmospheres. Fear increases in atmospheres of anxiety, but it cannot survive in the presence of true worship.
“I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.” (Psalm 34:4)
You don’t have to feel fearless to stand in faith. Worship isn’t about how you feel, it’s about who you trust.
Worship confronts the atmosphere of fear because it enthrones the presence of God. Fear loses its grip when God is exalted.
Let’s make a distinction here:
• The fear of the Lord is clean and life giving (Psalm 19:9).
• The spirit of fear is unclean and paralyzing.
The fear of the Lord produces wisdom and humility. The spirit of fear produces torment and doubt. The fear of the Lord leads you into deeper trust. The spirit of fear pulls you into self preservation.
If your fear leaves you anxious, uncertain, or striving, it’s not from God.
What If the Worst Happens?
If the worst happens, God will still be God.
• If the business fails, God is still your provider.
• If you’re betrayed, God is still your defender.
• If the diagnosis comes, God is still your healer.
Jesus stood before Pilate, knowing He was about to face torture and death, and He declared:
“You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above.” (John 19:11)
That’s the posture of fearless faith. When you know God is still God, even if the worst happens, fear loses its hold.
The Cross Already Settled This
Jesus stripped fear of its power when He walked out of the grave. Fear is an illusion. Its only weapon is deception.
When you know that God is still God, no matter the outcome, you strip fear of its power. You don’t need to know the outcome. You need to know the One who holds the outcome.
“Perfect love casts out fear.” (1 John 4:18)
Perfect love isn’t a feeling. It’s the unshakable revelation that God is still God, and He is enough.
So confront your fear today. Call out the lie. Declare that God is still God. And let fear lose its grip once and for all.
