First Fruit Fire

First Fruit Fire

The Joyful Overflow of Giving

There is a sound that heaven listens for. It is not the sound of obligation. It is not the quiet sigh of someone calculating percentages. It is the sound of delight. It is the sound of a heart that has encountered abundance and cannot help but respond. It is the sound of a joyful giver.

When we talk about tithing, offerings, and alms, we have to begin in the right place. Not with law. Not with fear. Not with pressure. We begin with encounter. Because any teaching on giving that is not rooted in encounter will eventually become performance. And performance always leads to exhaustion. But encounter leads to overflow.

The language of first fruits is not about a transaction. It is about devotion. It is about priority. It is about what your heart reaches for first when increase comes into your life.

The First Response of the Heart

In ancient times, the idea of first fruits was deeply embedded in the rhythm of life. When the harvest came in, the first and best portion was set aside and offered to God. Not because God needed crops, but because the people needed alignment. They needed to remember where their provision came from.

First fruits was never about God demanding something. It was about people declaring something.

It was a declaration that said, I trust You more than I trust what is in my hand.

And that is where we have to reclaim the conversation around tithing. Because somewhere along the way, we reduced something sacred into something mathematical. We turned a relational act into a percentage. And when you reduce devotion to a number, you rob it of its power.

Beyond the Tenth

Now let me say something that might unsettle some people. Tithing is not about ten percent. It never was.

Yes, there is a historical framework where ten percent appears. But the heart behind it was never about hitting a minimum requirement. It was about cultivating a life that says God gets the first and the best.

If all we ever do is aim for ten percent, we might miss the point entirely. Because you can give ten percent and still not be surrendered. You can give ten percent and still be anxious. You can give ten percent and still be calculating what you have left instead of celebrating what you get to release.

The invitation is not to become a percentage giver. The invitation is to become a joyful giver.

The Overflow Life

A joyful giver does not give out of scarcity. A joyful giver gives out of overflow. And overflow is not about how much money you have. It is about the condition of your heart.

You can have little and still live in overflow. You can have much and still live in lack.

Overflow is the revelation that everything you have comes from a good Father. And when that revelation takes root, generosity becomes natural. It becomes your first instinct.

So when increase comes into your life, whether it is a paycheck, a gift, or an unexpected blessing, the question is not, what percentage do I owe. The question is, how do I honor the One who provided this.

That is first fruits.

It is not delayed. It is not secondary. It is not squeezed in after everything else is taken care of. It is first. It is intentional. It is joyful.

Tithes, Offerings, and Alms

Now let us bring some clarity to these three expressions of giving, because they are not the same.

Tithing, in its essence, is about honoring God with your increase. It is the act of setting aside what is first and best and dedicating it to Him. It is a rhythm of devotion. It keeps your heart aligned. It reminds you that you are not your own source.

Offerings go beyond that. Offerings are acts of generosity that flow from love and obedience. They are not tied to a specific moment of increase. They are prompted by the Spirit. Offerings might be sacrificial. They might stretch you. They might call you into deeper trust. But they are always invitations, never obligations.

Alms are different still. Alms are about compassion. They are about caring for the poor, the marginalized, and the vulnerable. Alms are not given to God in the same way tithes are. They are given to people as an expression of God’s heart. When you give alms, you are participating in justice. You are reflecting the generosity of heaven to those in need.

So we have devotion, generosity, and compassion. Tithes, offerings, and alms. Each one matters. Each one reveals something about the heart of the giver.

The Danger of Obligation

If we are not careful, we can approach all three from a place of duty. And duty will drain the life out of giving.

You were never designed to give because you have to. You were designed to give because you get to.

There is a massive difference.

When you give because you have to, you are focused on what you are losing. When you give because you get to, you are aware of what you are participating in.

You are partnering with the economy of heaven. You are stepping into a rhythm of trust. You are declaring that your security is not found in accumulation, but in relationship.

A Historical Perspective

If we look back at the early church, we do not see people arguing about percentages. We see people so overwhelmed by the goodness of God that they held nothing as their own.

They sold possessions. They shared resources. They made sure no one lacked anything.

Why?

Because they had encountered something that changed their perspective entirely. They were no longer living from fear. They were living from abundance.

This is the heart we are after. Not legal compliance, but transformational encounter.

The First Movement Matters

There is something powerful about what you do first.

The first words you speak in the morning set the tone for your day. The first thoughts you entertain shape your mindset. And the first thing you do with your increase reveals your priorities.

When you choose to give first, you are making a statement. You are saying, God, You are at the center of my life. You are my source. You are my provider.

And that act, simple as it may seem, has the power to rewire your heart.

Joy as the Measure

If we are going to measure anything, let it be joy.

Not how much you give, but how you give.

Are you excited to release it? Are you grateful for the opportunity? Do you feel connected to the One you are honoring?

Because God is not after your money. He is after your heart.

And when your heart is engaged, generosity becomes a delight.

Becoming a Hysterical Giver

There is a phrase that captures this beautifully. A hysterical giver. Not in the sense of chaos, but in the sense of overwhelming joy.

A giver who laughs while they give. A giver who cannot believe they get to be part of something so beautiful.

This kind of giving is contagious. It shifts atmospheres. It breaks the grip of fear. It opens the door for provision to flow in ways you never expected.

Practical Alignment

So how do we live this out?

When you receive income, pause. Do not rush past the moment. Recognize it as provision.

Then respond. Give first. Not because you are calculating a percentage, but because you are honoring a relationship.

Ask yourself, what does joy look like in this moment. What does generosity look like here.

And then follow that.

Some seasons you may give what feels like a tenth. Other seasons you may give more. The point is not the number. The point is the heart.

Then look for opportunities to give offerings. Be sensitive to the Spirit. When you feel that nudge to bless someone or sow into something meaningful, do not hesitate.

And do not neglect alms. Keep your heart open to the needs around you. Let compassion move you.

The Freedom of Trust

At the end of the day, this all comes down to trust.

Do you trust that God is good? Do you trust that He will provide? Do you trust that you are not going to run out?

Because if you do, giving becomes easy.

Not always comfortable, but always joyful.

And that is the invitation. Not to live under pressure, but to live in freedom. Not to give out of fear, but to give out of love.

Final Thoughts

Tithing as first fruits is not about fulfilling a requirement. It is about cultivating a lifestyle of devotion.

Offerings are not about obligation. They are about generosity.

Alms are not about duty. They are about compassion.

And all of it flows from a heart that has encountered the goodness of God.

So let your giving be first. Let it be joyful. Let it be overflowing.

Because when you step into that rhythm, you are not just giving money. You are participating in the heartbeat of heaven.

If you feel led to partner with what God is doing through this ministry, we invite you to sow into this work as the Spirit leads. Your generosity helps us continue to share His love and truth with others. There is no obligation only an opportunity to join in what God is building. Thank you for considering being a part of this journey.
