Katharsis

The Purging That Frees You
Listen to me on this—there’s no resurrection without death, no glory without suffering, no true freedom without a purging. We want the oil, the anointing, the intimacy with God, but we resist the process that births it. Katharsis—the Greek word for purification, cleansing, a purging—this is what we try to avoid, yet it’s the very thing that brings us into the fullness of who we are in Christ.
Purging Isn’t Punishment—It’s Love
If you belong to Him, He will refine you. Not because He’s angry, not because He’s disappointed, but because you are His. Beloved identity demands katharsis. You cannot carry the weight of His glory while still clinging to the filth of the old man. This isn’t about striving to be clean—it’s about submitting to the cleansing fire of the Holy Spirit.
When Isaiah saw the Lord, high and lifted up, he was undone (Isaiah 6). He didn’t stand in pride. He didn’t bargain with God. He was wrecked. And what did God do? He sent fire. A burning coal to the lips, a purging that made Isaiah fit for the call. You want a calling, but do you want the coal? You want His voice, but do you want the cleansing?
Katharsis Is the Death of False Identity
God is not in the business of behavior modification. He’s in the business of transformation. That means everything that is not rooted in who He says you are has to go. Fear, orphan thinking, striving, insecurity—these things do not belong to a beloved son or daughter. And yet, we hold onto them because they feel familiar.
But listen—just because it’s familiar doesn’t mean it’s from the Father. If it didn’t come from Him, it has to be purged.
The children of Israel were delivered from Egypt in a day, but it took 40 years for Egypt to be purged from them. Why? Because slavery had become their identity. They didn’t know how to live free. That’s many of us. We say we’re free, but we still think like slaves—bound to performance, bound to the opinions of others, bound to the need to prove ourselves.
Katharsis exposes the bondage in your soul. It’s the mercy of God to bring you into the wilderness and strip you of every lie you’ve believed about yourself so that only His truth remains.
Don’t Fear the Fire—It’s Making You Holy
Holiness isn’t legalism. Holiness isn’t religious performance. Holiness is belonging completely to Him. And that means nothing can compete with Him in your heart.
God is not afraid to burn away everything in you that doesn’t look like Him. In fact, He is committed to it. The fire doesn’t destroy you—it destroys what is keeping you from Him. It’s love. It’s grace. It’s mercy.
Jesus said, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God” (Matthew 5:8). Purity isn’t about moral perfection—it’s about having a heart that is fully yielded to Him. Undivided. Whole. Free.
Let Him Purge You
The process is painful, but the fruit is glorious. When He cleanses you, you see Him rightly. When He purifies you, you carry His presence. This is what you were made for—to walk in beloved identity, fully surrendered, fully whole, fully His.
So stop resisting. Stop clinging to the old. If He is stripping you, it’s because He’s preparing you. If He is pruning you, it’s because He’s bringing forth more fruit. If He is refining you, it’s because He wants you close.
Katharsis is not your destruction. It’s your deliverance. Yield to it.
