Perichoresis

The Dance of Union and Beloved Identity
Let’s talk about perichoresis. It’s not a word you hear every day, but it’s everything when it comes to understanding God’s nature and what it means to be loved by Him. Perichoresis is this ancient Greek word that basically describes the relationship of the Trinity—the Father, Son, and Spirit living in this eternal dance of love, union, and mutual delight. It’s not a static thing; it’s vibrant, alive, and overflowing.
And here’s the wild part: the dance wasn’t designed to stay between them. Heaven didn’t just invite us to watch from the sidelines. No, heaven emptied itself, bankrupted itself, to pull us right into the middle of it all. Through Jesus, we’ve been placed smack in the center of the Father’s love for the Son, the Son’s love for the Spirit, and the Spirit’s love for the Father.
Let’s unpack this, because it changes everything.
The Divine Dance
In John 14:10-11, Jesus says,
“Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.”
This is the dance. The Father and Son are so intertwined that everything one does flows out of their union with the other. They don’t compete; they celebrate each other. Their love is so full, so overflowing, that it spills out, creating the world and sustaining it. That’s the heart of perichoresis: a love so perfect it’s alive.
But here’s the thing—this dance isn’t just about God’s internal relationship. The whole story of the Bible is about God making room in this dance for us. It’s like the Trinity couldn’t help but pull us into their love.
Heaven Gave Everything
John 3:16 isn’t just a verse you learn in Sunday school. It’s the hinge of all creation:
“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
Heaven gave everything. Jesus stepping into our world wasn’t just about fixing sin—it was about restoring us to the fullness of union with God. He didn’t just open the door; He brought us all the way in.
Paul says it like this in Colossians 2:9-10:
“For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness.”
You catch that? The fullness of God is in Christ, and because of Christ, we’ve been brought into that same fullness. We’re not outsiders hoping to get a glimpse of this divine dance. We’re part of it. Jesus made sure of that.
Living as the Beloved
This changes how we see everything. We’re not working to earn a place in God’s heart. We’re already in. In John 17:21-23, Jesus prayed:
“…that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one—I in them and you in me…”
You and I are in Him. Think about that. The same love the Father has for Jesus is the love He has for us. That’s not just theology; that’s identity. It’s who we are. We are His beloved.
This is why Jesus came. Not to give us a ticket to heaven someday, but to pull us into this union right now. It’s done. It’s finished. Heaven’s greatest treasure was poured out to place you and me right in the middle of the Trinity’s love.
Overflowing Love
When you start living from this place of beloved identity, it spills out. You can’t help it. Jesus said in John 15:9-12:
“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love… My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.”
The love that flows within the Trinity is now flowing through us. It’s why we forgive when it’s hard, why we love when it’s messy, and why we give even when it costs us everything. We don’t do it to earn God’s love; we do it because we’re already full of it.
Stepping Into the Dance
Perichoresis is more than a theological concept; it’s the reality we live in. Heaven didn’t hold anything back to make sure we could take our place in this eternal dance. We’re not spectators. We’re family.
So today, let that sink in. You’re not just loved by God—you’re in God. You’re in the middle of the most beautiful relationship in existence. You’re fully known, fully loved, and fully included.
Heaven gave everything for this. Let’s not waste a second doubting it. Let’s live like we belong—because we do.
